From Gulf Coast to DC Eisenhower Institute experts lead Spring Break Trips Posted: 29 Mar 2011 01:10 AM PDT From probing disasters that devastated New Orleans to visiting with DC policy-makers, the Eisenhower Institute of Gettysburg College students made the most of spring break. The first group planned tours and meetings with policymakers along the Gulf Coast. The trip was the culmination of a year-long mentoring project, Troubled Waters: Environmental Policy and the Chesapeake Bay, led by EI Environmental Policy Fellow and U.S. Naval Academy political science Prof. Howard Ernst. |
Former editor of The New Republic Andrew Sullivan to speak on campus Feb. 22 Posted: 23 Feb 2011 12:48 AM PST Political blogger, author, and former editor of The New Republic Andrew Sullivan lectured about the political and moral status of homosexuality on Feb. 22 at Gettysburg College. The lecture was presented by the Eisenhower Institute of Gettysburg College. The 7:30 p.m. lecture, "Virtually Normal: An Argument About Homosexuality," took place in the College Union Building's room 260, located along West Lincoln Avenue. Author and filmmaker Mike Tidwell addresses sustainability Posted: 10 Feb 2011 07:40 AM PST The fluorescent lights of CUB 260 were seemingly transformed into the "tangerine sunshine" of the south Louisiana bayou, and the figurative smell of Cajun cooking seemingly overtook the room as Michael Tidwell, guest of the Eisenhower Institute's Troubled Waters Program, painted the picture of a business trip to the bayous of Louisiana that changed his life. |

Inside Politics students meet one-on-one with professionals in D.C. Posted: 11 Jan 2011 06:24 AM PST One-on-one interaction with political professionals in Washington, D.C. is a key component of Inside Politics, a semester-long mentoring and research experience offered by Gettysburg College's Eisenhower Institute (EI). Fall 2010's Inside Politics expert-in-residence, former George W. Bush speechwriter and historian Kasey S. Pipes, mentored 15 students throughout a wide range of progamming, including a multi-day experience in Washington and a semester-long research project. Pipes introduced students to professionals such as Fox news commentator Juan Williams and Sarah Palin campaign advisor Tucker Eskew. |
Uncovering Eisenhower’s French connection: Cara Elliott ’11 earns research scholarship Posted: 10 Jan 2011 08:12 AM PST To paint her portrait of an elusive politician, Cara Elliott '11 shifted between two languages, traveled hundreds of miles, and hunted for resources across the country. With the help of Prof. Michael Birkner, Gettysburg College's history department and the college's Eisenhower Institute, Elliott was able to add significantly to the scholarly understanding of rarely-explored C. Douglas Dillon, the U.S. ambassador to France during Eisenhower's presidency, and then turn the project into a springboard for a scholarship and life after Gettysburg. |
EI Fellows to present at sustainability conference in New Zealand Posted: 05 Jan 2011 12:06 AM PST Five Gettysburg College students will travel to New Zealand to present their public-policy research at a conference on sustainability. With topics ranging from biofuels to the rights of indigenous peoples, they will be the only undergraduates invited to present at the On Sustainability Conference in Hamilton, New Zealand, which has been convened at sites in the Pacific Basin since 2005. The trip will be part of the students' experience in the Undergraduate Fellows program of Gettysburg College's Eisenhower Institute. |
